Why has the earth got cracks?
- 1 decade agoFavorite Answer
Depends on scale:
Dry lake beds are cracked because soil shrinks when the water evaporates.
Mountains crack when weathering weakens the rocks and they break apart by their own weight.
Volcanoes can cause expansion or contraction under ground causing cracks to form.
Continents push every which way and causes cracks where they meet.
Oceanic trenches are sort of inverse cracks where upwelling materials form new lithospheric plate material.
And large meteorites can impact the planet and crack the mantel usually resulting in mass extinctions of life on earth.
