Compromise. You can talk until you are both blue in the face. You can perform nice gestures for each other. But in the long run sometimes you just have to compromise and baby the other person. It took me and my husband a long time to figure this out and now we are better than ever.

A succesful relationship is founded most primarily on trust and communication. Without these two the relationship will crumble. But to have these, personalities must mesh. As such, I would view personality as the most important factor in serious relationships--from there you get trust, communication, responsibility, loyalty, etc.
