what are the chances that an alien race that has advanced much more than us, will want to kill us? Any race that has destructive tendency, will most probably destroy itself before it can advance to a greater level. Look at us. We were this close to killing each other off in the world wars, and then even worse in the cold war. Each time it was the anti-destructive tract of humanity that saved us from annihilation. Love, peace, creativity, art, music, compassion, goodness may be under-reported by your news channel, but they are what has kept us alive.

So, isn't it more probable that an advanced alien race will be more benevolent, will want to help rather than subjugate? I believe the answer to this question is going to be decided by what the developed world chooses to do for Africa in the coming years. Will we take away our guns and let their cultures evolve on their own? will we lend the west's scientific achievements to solve their problems? I think we will. Therefore, applying the same idea, i'd very much like to get in touch with an alien race. who knows? we might end up helping them in some way!

Maybe the aliens know how to solve those problems for us. It's not like aliens are automatically hostile or something.

Why not? Looking for intelligent life on other planets is just an interesting thing to do, and doing it does not prevent us from doing all the other things we want and need to do.

Escapism. People don't like to face their own problems and weaknesses. So we do things and accomplish feats to make ourselves feel good, so we don't feel bad about the problems and weaknesses.
