Is intervals better then regular aerobics training?
For example, i alternate bewteen doing running intervals and distance running throughout the week.

I think it's good to do both. In my running courses, that's how we did it. Interval training mixed with distance.
Feels to me like the interval training helps to build up your system for the endurance runs. By doing intervals, you are pushing the cardiovascular system, so lung, heart, etc are getting a big workload, which they will have to adapt to. Vital capacity increases, heart stronger, etc.
When you do endurance runs, you can go farther because you generally are running at a set pace, less than your high intervals. Better your CV system is, the longer you can go at a sustained pace without stopping.
