First: factor the numerator and denominator:

    = [(x - 7)(x + 1)]/[(x + 1)(x - 1)

Second: cancel "like" terms > cancel (x+1) from the top and bottom:

    = (x - 7)/(x - 1)

    x-7

    ------

    x-1

This is the answer b/c the top factors out to (x-7)(x+1) and the bottom factors to (x+1)(x-1) and the (x+1) cancels out on the top and bottom....

    x^2 - 6x - 7 / x^2 - 1

    (x + 1)(x - 7) / (x - 1)(x + 1)

    (x - 7) / (x - 1)
