If a jewish elects have been sworn in congress with the torah, and Christians with a bible? Why can't?

A muslim elect use his holy book? Where in the constitution does it say "When your sworn in to congress use a bible if you believe or not?"

I mean c'mon wasn't this land founded on religous freedom? So why is there a big deal?

Why don't we just be politically correct and get rid of the religous books and just have them be sworn in on a copy of the constitution since thats the law of the land, not the bible or Qu'ran....

and last time I checked the law called for seperation of church and state so no one should care who uses which religous book

Update:

TO respond to ratman I'm referring to the Quran Oath Controversy of the 110th United States Congress...where Keith Ellison wanted to use a Qu'ran for the Unoffical swearing in and Dennis Prager and other Conservatives balked...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quran_Oath_Controvers...

You were saying Ratman?

Update 2:

Bender You are wrong . This claim is a factual error as several Jewish elected officials have been sworn in on the Torah

Update 3:

If we looked at track records decktape...the Bible should signify more terror and bloodshed than the Qu'ran just look at the track record

    A few points

first off swearing on any book is only a publicity stunt which has no real legal value.

second I sharply disagree with Prager. As another religious Jew if I was elected to any political office I would refuse to use a Christian bible.

The Muslim congressman was in his full right to use the Quran and I would be supired if he used anything else.

Jews have always been sworn in with the Holy Bible. The Holy Bible has been used since the beginning for every member of Congress. It's a Tradition. Not a Religious matter.

undercover they say it's tradition but in fact it's to let everyone know what they are. So swearing in just under the constitution would leave people in the blind as to what they are. Identity is the reason!!

The book a person uses to be sworn in, lets everyone perceive them as good or bad, so a Muslim swearing in with the Quran would be perceived as a terrorist but in reality they are all terrorist, just look at their track record, they all keep people in some type of depression

    Edit

you need a history lesson, did you forget the Muslims took Jerusalem & fought both the Jews & Christians, and for what God, Hell No, it was for power and that is the reason for religion and the book of claims, it's all a scam amd quest for power, the US is not a nation of one people, like countrys in europ and the east or middleeast, open you eyes to the truth, God will not be comeing back no matter what you call him

When members of congress (House and Senate) are sworn in, it is "in mass". They all raise one hand and do it at the same time. None of them have ever been sworn in with their hand on a Bible, a Torah, or any other book. They have posed for photo ops later with appropriate props, like a Bible. But during the actual swearing in no Bible is used. So the whole question is pointless.

Jewish? Jewish what???? A Jew's Bible is the 1st Testament -- which is included with the Christian's 2nd Testament.

No book is required. Any of them can be sworn in without any religious book. Those making an issue of it are just trying to stir up controversy. The whole thing is irrelevant.

Yet another way to get rid of the bible, This nation was founded on Freedom of religion, But not fanactical religion. What is the reason at all to swear them in, they all are lying & will not do what they promise to do before elections.

WRONG! The Holy Bible has always been used for swearing in of everyone. No Jew has been sworn in with any other book.

People LOOK, he didn't name a specific event. Where did this happen? Is this an actual event or something you came up with in your mind? Because quite honestly if thats all your saying it looks like your pulling this one from your solid nether regions.

BTW separation means the governments adoption of ONE religion as the official religion. By denying a congressman from swearing on the holy book of their choice is against the first amendment (I.E. no law shall be made denying the free practice of religion)

Political correctness is the death of free speech. By it's nature it inhibits speech to be more presentable. Kinda sounds like what Atheists say Christianity or faith in general is doing.

While I am an Atheist I think if Islam is what the elected belives in then he or she should be allowed to swear on his religion's holy book.
