Do universities in the uk have fraternities or sororities?

No, they are a peculiar idea which have no direct equivalent in the UK.
There are so-called "drinking societies" at Oxford, Cambridge and London, which have membership by invitation only, strange initiation ceremonies, and whose sole activity is the excessive consumption of alcohol. Their members are generally pitied, not envied.
For quite a while up to the outbreak of the first World War, German universities had active duelling societies whose status, customs and activities seem to have been quite a good parallel to the current US fraternity system. There may well be a link, due to extensive European immigration.
