Are SATA hard drives more prone to failure than IDE drives?

Also, what is a good fanless external enclosure (similar to Lacie aluminium ones) for a Seagate 400gb/750gb?

No, they are not. If you need an enclosure. Try Newegg, Tiger Direct or CDW (I recommend Newegg). As i'm sure you are aware, when there is a problem with something most people post online about it, so problems seem much bigger than they really are.

SATA vs PATA? In most cases, the only difference is the PCB (controller card) on the drive. So, unless there is a problem with one of the chips on the PCB, there really shouldn't be any difference in stability.

Enclosures? I find that Macally work best. They tend to be a bit more expensive, but what is $10 when you think about it? The offer, Firewire 400/800, USB 2.0 and a combined version as well as a SATA version.
