Question to Jews and/or historians about "the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself unto the LORD"

Were these people fully accepted members of the Jewish society with the same rights as the Israelites? Were they allowed to intermarry with the Israelites? If not, after how many generations did these families become fully accepted?
