Aqua Regia is made by combining nitric acid and chlorhydric acid in a proportion of 1:3. Since this solution is very unstable you must prepare right before the experiment.

Even though Aqua Regia can dissolve gold, none of its components will do the job being alone. Nitric acid can dissolve an undetectable amount of gold (just the surface), creating Au ions. Chlorhydric acid, on the other hand, wil produce Cl ions, which react with the Au ions, taking off that layer that got dissolved. This allows the acid to keep dissolving deeper and deeper, which will end up dissolving the gold.

Here's some help with the math:

    Au + 3NO3- + 6H+ → Au3+ + 3NO2↑ + 3H2O

    Au3+ + 4Cl- + H+ → HAuCl4

    Hope this helps you.
