don't expect a price drop for at least a year, maybe more. Sony is losing their shirts on the sales of the hardware (much more than 200 dollars a unit like a previous answers stated).

There is a problem brewing around the PS3 though. As more and more Wiis and 360 sell while Sony continues to lag on the PS3, game developers are beginning to worry that there will not be a large enough console base to ensure a reasonable profit for games developed for the PS3.

This has the possibility of creating a cascading effect that might lead to the PS3 going the way ot the Dreamcast or Atari Jaguar. If fewer games are released, fewer consoles will sell because people will buy the other consoles with more of the games they like. If fewer and fewer consoles sell, then more and more developers will back away from producing games for the PS3.

    See where this is heading?

I hope this doesn't happen but there is definitely the possibility if Sony doesn't "pull their head out" soon.

*****By the way, the CELL processor was custom designed for the PS3. It was never used on anything else (supercomputers) because it did not exist.

My guess...a good while. They already lose over $200 since the cost it takes them to build the thing is that much over what they sell it for (IE THEY ACTUALLY LOSE MONEY WHEN THEY SELL YOU A PS3 and hope to make it back when you buy their games or Blu-Ray videos/disc).

    A) They are using Blu-Ray, a $250+ new HD-DVD-type technology to get higher video resolution

    B) They are using CELL processors, previously only used in supercomputers for monster scientific processes like Geophysics.

In short, they are essentially selling something much more powerful than a high-line gaming desktop PC for a lower price. Until they get popular enough for, say, the makers of the CELL chip (or Sony's Blu-Ray technology) to do higher volume, more efficient mass production (where the hardware would cost less to make), prices are likely to stay high.

I would guess this would take at least a year, maybe two. The lowest price I could imagine for such a kit, even with very good mass production, is around $300...it's likely never going to be as cheap as the Xbox 360 or Wii at any point in the future as all the systems become a bit cheaper.

As soon as they realize that they will go bankrupt if they keep on producing it.

****Oh yeah for the guy who says they are losing $200 dollars per console, your wrong it currently costs Sony almost $1200 to build one system!****

As soon as they realize the Nintendo Wii is kicking it's butt in sales.
