The staples inside a stapler are kept in place by a spring with a relaxed length of .115 meters.?

If the spring constant is 51 N/m, how much elastic potential energy is stored in the spring when its length is .15m?

    The equation for Potential Energy of Springs is 1/2 times Sping Constant times the square of the distance compressed/stretched, or Us = (1/2)kx^2

    The distance compressed is from .115m to .15m, so by substratcing you get .035m

    So by plugging in the values, you get:

    Us=(1/2) 51[N/m] * (.035[m])^2

    Us= .031 J
