Are there any free ancestry sites?

Are there any ancestry sites that can provide thorough family genealogy for free (without the use of a credit card)?

I'm sure there are other's out there also you may get a free trial with but expect to not be able to look up alot. Also, try putting your ancestors name into a search feild on yahoo or google and it will bring up sights like or good luck!

There are ways of accessing ancestry besides a subscription, but they can be pretty hit or miss. Many libraries that have a genealogy section have a subscription you can use, check with your librarian.

Also many of genealogy centers at LDS churches have a similar subscription.

For awhile, if you be the latest version of family tree maker you got a free subscription to the US portion of but not the European information.

    Good luck.

If you have ancestors from the UK, you can access the birth, marriage and death indexes for free at:

From 1984 to 2004 is searchable, from 1837 to 1983 you have to view each image yourself. This is a fantastic resource, because other sites will actually charge you to view the exact same information.

Some of the BMD information is searchable at:

Not all of the records have been transcribed yet, but a fairly decent portion have, so it's worth searching there before you look at each image at the other site.

I find Geneanet very good in the sense that you can research names you want but also, once you register (free) you also get their newsletter which advises you of the names you are researching. I find it very useful. There are currently over 139 million entries.

    Have fun! Good research!
