What is "separates" in suits and tuxedos?

The term "separates" is often used with reference to suits and tuxedos. What is exactly meant by it?

Does that mean:

Jacket and Pant are to be selected 'separately'. OR

Suits that will 'separate' at seams.

Plz clarify.

separates means you can buy the pants and coat separately. for example: you're really hard on pants so you could buy one coat and three pants. or you're upside down on your sizes you could buy a 46 coat and a 34 pants (that would not be available in a suit).

A suit used to convert one's outward appearance to the guise of a monkey. This term was most prevalent in the inspirational movie "Going Bananas" in which Bonzo, a midget woman from Los Angeles encounters an identity crisis, eventually winning the US Open all while fooling America into thinking she was a 7 year old monkey tennis champion.
