The kidneys help maintain water balance, and they filter wastes from the blood. In filtration each nephron of the kidney has an independent blood supply. Blood moves through the afferent arteriole into the glomerulus, a high-pressure filter. Dissolved solutes pass through the walls of the glomerulus into the Bowman's capsule. Filtration is accomplished by the movement of fluids from the blood into the Bowman's capsule.
