First to help count the census, the later to calculate ballistics, and later meteorology drove the development. Other applications such as book keeping, and billing drove many of the early purchases by companies.

The Internet started out to create a system for computers to communicate with each other by relaying and routing packets, with the idea being that with many paths even if one was knocked out by say a bomb, the system would be able to find other routes to pass the packets using the other paths.l.
