For a THIRD grader, what is the easiest way to explain how to figure out miles per hour?

Why don't you take them for a test walk and see if they can walk one mile per hour.
Use that as a reference for faster modes of transport, how far could they travel on a cycle, in a car etc.

Explain with an example. If a car was going 40 miles an hour, it means that if the car did not stop, go fast or slow down for one full hour, the car would have traveled 40 miles.
Would that help?

use the sixty mph. for one hrs. formula. there's sixty mins. in an hrs. and at sixty mph.you go a mile a min.

Take him/her to a large field, throw them out of the car and drive away, you'll see how fast they'll understand what miles are as they chase behind you.
