Why isnt the horror genre recognized for award shows?

Especially back in the 70's-80's

    The Academy Awards tend to favor more serious message films so horror, comedy and musicals often get over looked. I think this happens because Hollywood believes this makes them look deep and involved. Back in 1973 The Exoricist did receive a number of nominations, Best Picture, Best Actress among them. It did win for Best Adapted Screenplay. It won Best Picture - Drama at the Golden Globes.

    Because it's nothing that has ever been spectacular; horror movies are usually cookie-cutters of past horror movies and lack storytelling ability. They're just fun to watch because they're gorefests.

    Note: I do like some horror films.

    Probably because when they show the clips for the nominees it would be too scary since anyone's allowed to watch award shows.
