what does it mean for a tooth to quiet down and why would a temporary restoration be placed on it?

Usually this saying "quiet down" is referred to a tooth that was showing a lot of symptoms and possibly needing a root canal. Usually dentists that aren't just out for your money will place a temporary restoration to see if more work is needed on that tooth. Also some temporary restorations like Ketac Silver have a medication in it to help resolve any flare-ups.
