What do you do with the bleach filler on my washer?

I have never used that thing or the fabric softner thing. How do they work and what is the point?

As everyone else has already said they are to dispense the products at the appropriate time. What wasn't said is that you have to mix the fabric softener with water at a ratio of 50/50 so you don't gum up the machine. Chlorine bleach is runny like water so doesn't need to be diluted. Make sure you wipe up the top of the bleach dispenser so you don't damage your own sleeves when reaching into the machine to pull out your clothing. Chlorine bleach is extremely strong but does a great job of whitening white cottons.

The bleach dispenser is for chlorine bleach that you would use only on whites. Fabric softener is used on any fabrics (other than towels) that aren't 100% cotton. It stops static electricity. You never want to use softener on anything absorbent because it leaves a coating and makes the fabrics far less absorbent. Why they always show towels in the commercials is beyond me!

In the old days my Mom would time the washer to put in the bleach or the fabric softner nowadays you do this all at once..so its there ready to go at the right time, its a convenience.

With the bleach filler, what you do is put a cup of bleach in that and put your regular detergent in the tub of the washer before you wash your whites. The bleach dispenser will automatically let the bleach in the washer at the appropriate time in the cycle.

Do not use bleach in your laundry, period. Use Oxi-Clean if you need bleaching action. [Add this with the detergent. And the water needs to be very warm or hot.] Thus, do not use the bleach dispenser.

For the fabric softener dispenser, I usually use straight, plain old vinegar. It softens, deodorizes, and keeps your washer from getting hard water and/or fabric softener "gunk" built up in it.

It's supposed to be so you don't have to sit and wait to put the bleach in or time it so you can put the softener in. It does it for you, that's all. You put the bleach in its filler compartment and the softener where it goes and shut the lid. It will dispense them at the right time.

To pour said products into the washer properly and not just to trow them randomly over your clothes, maybe?

Stay away from it because residual bleach will remain in it and ruin colors.
