For a new fixture, you should have 3 wires coming out of the light fixture itself. Black, white, and green. Hook the black wires together, hook the white wires together, use a wire connector. They are red, or yellow, have a screw inside, stick the black connected wires in,.and tighten till tight, do the same on white wires. Last, there should be a brass screw on the fixture, hook the green wire around this, loosen the screw first, then tighten it together. Vioila`, you're done.

or if you have newer wiring and plastic boxes, connect the ground wire from the fixture to the uncoated bare copper wire coming from the ceiling. There would be a white a black and an uncoated wire.

Should be a green colored screw that you attach the copper (uncoated) wire to. Please make sure the power is off to that cuircut.
