how do i know when to use simple past (-d/-ed) from past continuous (was/were +ing)?

pls explain it the easiest way possible. i couldn't explain it to my friend, he's learning english and is confused. thanks!

    Last night I slept wery well. (1)

    I was sleeping and the telephone rang. (2)

    Nr 1 the action finished in the past

    Nr 2 the action is going on in the past, but sometihing has it interrupted.
