Mother who doesn't burp baby?

My husband’s brother just had a baby boy. We've visited a few times and every time we are there that poor baby is very whiney and gassy. I figured he was just a whiney baby. But last night she feed him and just put him down on the couch. I'm pretty sure that is why he is so gassy, and she doesn’t know he should be patted on the back after feeding. I cant blame her, she is only 18 and never been around babies. She doesn’t have a mother or any other family to help. Otherwise I would never question a mothers parenting. I'm pregnant myself, and have been around many babies. I know this lil man needs to be patted after eating; he would be so much more comfortable and less gassy. My question is, how do I bring up to her about burping the baby and not offend her?

Next time you are around her and the baby is fussy take him and start patting his back!! Make sure she is listening!! After he burps which is much needed when they are soo young just be like "ohh was that your problem? You needed to be burped??" If she says anything just be like "Try to burp him after every feeding, seems like thats what he needed"...Make sure you tell her because babies need help when they are small to release their toxins..Good luck and I hope that helps :)

  • I would try to do as the 1st responder answered and just burp the baby after you feed it while visiting. Also if this baby is fussy from gas then the new parents will be quick to have a solution to a crying baby all the time. Also mention that you read an article about Milacon. Try getting her to sign up for magazines like American Baby and Baby Talk that are free and can be a good resource for her and help when she is not sure what to do with the baby.

What I would suggest is in conversation about the baby ask her if she has burped him before. My son took a long time to burp if i patted him on his back so I ended up laying him on his tummy of course with me there and rubbed his back. He burped alot better after that. Sometimes you need to teach the baby actually how to burp along with the mommy. As for gas I made a game out of it with my son and he actually loves it. I lay him on his back on the sofa or floor and i lift his legs to his chest and i smile with him and we both giggle in conversation. (hes only 9 weeks old) Now he knows also that if he has gas and laying on his back how to release it. If shes willing to listen to things about being a new parent she will except u just telling her he needs a burp after he eats and sometimes after a few ounces.

ask if it would be ok if you fed the baby and make sure you keep up conversation w/ her while you feed and burp the baby so you know that she is looking. Then maybe you don't need to say anything at all.

Maybe you could just mention that you knew a baby who did the same thing he does and his mom started patting his back after each feeding to get him to burp and it helped a lot. Then its up to her. Good Luck and nice of you to try to find a way that wouldnt affend her.

Just tell it like it is...and explain that may be why he is gassy. She'll appreciate the help, as like you said, she doesn't know. OR....after she feeds the baby ask if you can burp him for her....maybe she'll get the hint, if she asks why..then explain it to her...Yeah I like that one...
