This myth came about after it was found that the brain is composed of different types of cells. It was thought for some time that only neurons were used for information processing, and that the glial cells were support and nurturing structures. As neurons make up about 10% of the brain, this is where the numbers came from. It has been shown now using fMRI and other modern scanning techniques that this view is so much horses' elbows, and that glial cells connect different areas of the brain, which is why a smell can trigger a memory even though the two area of the brain have no direct connection.

Well, they look around, see people doing nothing at all and say "I guess they are using just 10% of their brain !".

So if a journalist hears him by chance, he carry's those words to his column with a magnificent headstart like " And the scientists revealed; we are just using 10% of our brain..."

    and we believe....

Actually no scientists say that, it's an urban legend. When you see MRI and cat scans and the like, you can see that almost the whole brain lights up at certain times.

People use all of their brain, just not at the same time.

When you eat, you use the taste and smell sense part of the brain. Your analytical and motor movement parts of your brain are not working.

When you do a project, your analytical part of your brain is working, and most of your senses and motor movement parts of your brain are not working.

It's like a computer. It may have a 3Gb hard drive, but you only use a part of the capacity at any one time.

Well, they look at someone smart, like Einstein and say he's using all of his brain... because he's smart. Then they look at someone like you, who doesn't seem so smart and say your only using 5% of your brain.

After looking at lots of people (many of them turn out to be a lot like you), they realize the average person uses 10% of their brain.

they have in the past experimented by removing 90% of a human brain and discovered that they could still fully function, it took them approx 25 years research, lots of brain, lots of dead humans, before they discovered the right 10%, I believe they are attempting to go as low as 5%, they are currently looking for volunteers check out www.usemybrain.com
