Why does my son chew on his nails and other things?

My son is 8 years old and he chews on his nails. Not only does he chew on his nails he chews on anything he can get a hold of. He has his bed railing all chewed up also. Please give me any wise answers as to your responses if you can.

Sounds like he has lots of inside tension! Just telling him to stop won't do it you need to get to the bottom of his problem. All that chewing is a cry for help which you need to take seriously!!

You should take him to your pediatrician maybe even to counseling. This is not a obey/disobey issue.

    Wish you all the best!

You need to know why he's doing it. I agree that you should talk to his Dr. about the bed railing because that does sound severe.

I used to suck my thumb and once I became aware of it I stopped. Then I started to bite my nails. Once I stopped doing that I started to twirl and pull my hair.

The point is that if I wasn't able to control my anxiety these bad habits would take over and I wouldn't know it until I looked at my hands again or saw the hair on my desk.

Since your son is 8, he must realize that he is doing something abnormal which will only add to any anxiety. Try not to fuss over the nails too much. Just try a small cue like putting your hand near your mouth to make him aware of what he's doing.

I've tried mittens, pepper, nail polish, and thumbstop to stop biting my nails and none really work if I can't focus on stopping the behavior.

Good luck to both of you

Sounds like he is nervous about something. Is he being picked on at school or something like that? Chewing on his nails is one thing, but to chew on the bed railings, to me, that is something else. I would talk to his doctor about that. Good Luck.

he's old enough you can tell him not to chew on his nails and bed and discipline him if he doesn't obey. I chew my nails sometimes, but, if you don't want him chewing his, you can put socks over his hands when you catch him doing it. Supposedly that works. Gotta tape the socks though.

some children chew on their fingers, it seems like their still hungry. get him to chew gum that would give him something to chew on as a substitute to his nails and bed railing.

My 8 yr old grandson chews his fingernails and toenails. It seems to me an unconscious thing they do which is brought on by nervousness or insecurity. My 10 yr old wraps his hair around his fingers all the time and doesn't know he does it.

I don't know the cure, wish I did.
