Somebody in here commented that AVG is crap. Don't know what his sources are, but I have used AVG for 3 years and can testify that its definitely one of the best antivirus packages available, including the ones that are not free. The sad part is that there will be no free AVG starting from January.

I switched to AVAST. Had been using it for about a month now. So far seems to be good.

If you want a free antivirus solution, stick with Avast. There are a few other options, but nothing really measures up in my opinion. Trend Micro offers a free online scanner, but this is not an active agent that is constantly running on your pc. Avast is well known, reliable, and spyware-free. Be VERY careful when downloading free virus/spyware protection. Many of the so-called free scanners are actually spyware (eg WinAntiVirus Pro). Stick with Avast and download a good free Anti-Spyware package like Ad Aware Some other Anti-Spyware options are Windows Defender Ewido (now AVG), and SpyBot but I like Ad-Aware the best. Good Luck and I hope this helps!

AVG and Avast are both JUNK. Totally worthless. I recommend active virus shield. It is the best one and it is free.
