One winter we had a lot of snow and there were snow drifts across the highways. We were barrelling down the road in a big old chevy, just plowing through the drifts as we went. All of a sudden, the car started to get cold in side, the heater was no longer working. We pulled over and popped the hood. What happened, every time we hit a drift, snow had been getting trapped in the engine compartment. After a few miles, the engine compartment was packed solid with snow - which had stopped the radiator fan from turning. We had to use screwdrivers to chip the snow out. We got a few more miles and it happened again, so we got out and popped the hood. This time the smow had knocked the fanbelt off of the crankshaft. All we had were screwdirvers to fix it. And it was below zero.

In really cold climates some types of plastic become very brittle.

Last winter I watched a TV documentary about the coldest town on Earth. Apparently they had problems filming it because bits kept breaking off the camera!

actually pipes burst from the water that freezes in them ( when water freezes and turns to ice, it expands.) . Tree branches break, power lines snap, some time windows. roofs can collapse from the weight of snow and ice.
