    When I was a teenager living in Los Angeles in the 1960s, a teacher told us we were in the middle of one of the biggest migrations in history. Of course this was not obvious to us. I had to admit, though, that most of the adults I met were not born in California, let alone Los Angeles.

    And that was years before the big migration from Mexico.
