I have a h/w question that I have absolutely no clue on how to do it and wondering if someone could explain it to me on how solve the question.

It says., "Draw the structure of the alkyl bromide you would use to cleanly synthesize the following ether [CH3OC(CH3)3] with no competing products.

I think a good way to synthesize this ether would be to treat CH3Br with Sodium t butoxide. This will do an SN2 substitution kicking of Br as a leaving group leaving you with the exact product you want and NaBr.

they are looking for the right Alkane

look at the structure of what you are trying to make

find an alkane that looks like that, use that

    C

in this case use C-C-C-C or 2 methyl butane I think
