Can anyone give me some advice on getting a job?

I'm 17, and have way to much free time on my hands, so I want to get a job. I've applied at a few places, but I've never heard back. Any ideas/suggestions?

Well I'd say, wait a week after applying, if you do not hear anything in return, call them yourself. Just introduce yourself and say you recently turned in an application and were curious to know if anyone had the opportunity to go over it yet. Also mention you are very interested in working there and look forward to hearing back from them.

You always want to sound interested in the position you're applying for and show confidence that you believe you can do a great job.

Also a tip before applying, or before accepting a job, is to go into the business you've applied to, by yourself or with a friend, hang out a bit, survey the people working around you - do they seem like nice people you would want to work around? Do you see any managers? Do they seem nice? is everyone busy and happy...or busy and being pushed around? Just observe. Being unhappy in a job is no fun.

So take the initiative and call the places back first, wait a week and give them a call...be friendly and be confident.

You'll get a job eventually and its a great idea that you want to go out and work and make your own money :)

This time of the year would be an excellent time due to the fact that many employers are hiring for the holidays. I would apply in person and then call or visit the store/place of business in a few days to follow up. BlockBuster is an excellent job for high school students providing you wanted to work in the evening (e.g.-closing the store at 11:10-pm or later) and on the weekends. They seem to be always hiring. My nephew works in one of these stores and this is his first job as well.

Good luck. Remember, the key to success is persistency and I also commend you for your efforts and desire to work.

The best way to get a job at your age is to walk in where you think you want to work and ask for the owner or manager. Tell them you can be an asset to their company. Most people who are just starting out are bound to ask for an application, fill it out, hand it in and then walk out. If the hiring manager sees you're enthusiastic and assertive your bound to have a leg up on the competition!

first...dont give up and dont get discouraged.

sort of make a game out of it. see how many no responses you can collect.

for the jobs that you really want that pay reasonably well and are good experience for you, go back to them and respond to them again by sending them a thank you letter.

keep visualizing that you are going to get a good job and remain focussed.

    good luck...
