Lies tend to feed off each other, meaning to prevent cognitive dissonance, the liar tends to make other parts of their life, and outlook to suit the distorted reality.

Habitual liars generally seem to have disturbed childhoods, and the problem with treatment tends to be both the self-perpetuating & self-justification of lying, and the fact that the liar will probably not see anything wrong with what they are doing. It can be a co-morbidity with several personality disorders such as narcissistic & histrionic PDs, so a psychologist appointment could be in order if there are symptoms of such.

Try gently confronting them with what you know to be a lie, and ask them what they get from deceiving you, and how it makes you feel to not get the truth from someone you care about.

People lie to control people and it is contemplated. They won't stop because society won't stop protecting them from the reality of their own behavior. HL, as you call them, are always dressed in the victim costume. Unlike the people they victimize, they are simply story tellers who's biggest fears are getting exposed - they hurt so they walk around hurting people. It's very very hard to tell the difference between a victim and a habitual liar and the HL is well aware of it. Nine times out of ten IF you can warm up to them enough to attempt to find out what they're problem is they project or fabricate everything to be pointed at they're mother like society suggests they do.

Unless you are dealing with a person who can not tell you they're name but then it wouldn't be called lying would it.

My stbx is a pathological liar. He lies to manipulate and contol everything to his advantage. He even uses his family members, co-workers, and friends in these deceptive ploys.

He is very likely a narcissist per our 5 marriage counselors. They describe him as: shallow, artificial, and extremely self-centered. The lying is as easy as breathing to him.

It actually hurts my brain to try to have an adult conversation with the demented illogical evasiveness of his responses.

Once you finally break their cover story though, you are very aware that your whole life with the guy is a lie. He projects an image- but it is a hologram- not real or genuine at all.

My boyfriend is like that! He doesn't even realize sometimes when he's lying! Usually, it's when his lips are moving! lol

In answer to your question though, originally I would have said yes, that they could overcome it... I did; but I was just a kid when I would lie all of the time, and I didn't realize the impact until later in life. However, like I said, my boyfriend still doesn't, and he's 35 years old!!! So, maybe not, maybe, if you don't grow out of it by a certain age, you just can't?

I wish I had the answer. I know several people who lie constantly, mostly about little insignifigant things. It is irritating. It has to be some crosswiring in the brain, or some deeply rooted childhood experiences.

First off, there is a new invention called spell and grammar check. You might want to invest in it. Second, pathological liars can benefit from counseling. You could benefit from a spell checker.
