Why are rude people surprised when you are rude in return?

I am a reporter at a small newspaper and I sometimes eat lunch in our breakroom. These 2 ladies from another department are so rude-- they'll change the channel from the one you were watching, talk loudly over the tv to each other... just rude. Today I got a sub sandwhich and it had onions on it. One lady says with a look of disgust, "I don't know why you got that sandwhich with all those onions on it." So I said "So for MY lunch, I'm only supposed to buy what YOU like?" She rolled her eyes at me at said "Hmph" like I was in the wrong. What's up with that? Anyone else ever experience that rude people dish it out but don't want to take it?

Yes, I am sure most people have experienced a rude person before, but someone at work should have a bit more self control. After all, they are going to see you again tomorrow aren't they?

Rude remarks like this are unwelcome to everyone, even those who think they are "tougher" or "quicker to respond" than everyone else. If it hurts you or insults you, then the last thing that you want to do is join in to the silliness. You are too smart and too classy to start acting rude just to "get even".

Besides, when you act classier than everyone else, they hold you in higher regard. That high level of admiration will leave them down below in the dust, when you get promoted or receive a bonus for your positive attitude and professionalism.

Please don't stoop to their low level of trash talk, you have a future in front of you that requires your integrity and credibility to shine!

You have to keep in mind that rude people think the world revolves around them and them only. Rude people think that they are better then everybody. To be breathing the same air as others is just unacceptable. Look, when they come into the break room and change the channel on the TV, get up and put it back, and an "excuse me but I was watching that". Don't be rude back, be nice and firm, stand your ground, before you know it they''ll stop coming to the break room, or go when your not there. Smother them with kindness........they hate it.

I have a co-worker like this, he always use to get on my last nerve with his rudeness. But I've learned that he simply wasn't taught any manners (he can be intimidating, also, and I half think his mom was actually scared of him!). So after a while, I learned that being rude to him in return only made my life more miserable, as he didn't know why I was being rude to him. I just let more things slide now, and it seems that he's learning a little from my example.

I hate people like that! I know exactly how you feel. I remember this girl who used to be really rude to pretty much everyone - she would just say whatever she wanted to say and was always criticizing people. I don't usually ever say anything when people are rude, but one day at lunch, I got really tired of her when she criticized my friend over what she was eating, so I just told her, "She can eat whatever she wants to eat." I wanted to say more, but I was too timid. And she actually said to me, "Why are you being so rude? blah blah blah..." I think that's the perfect example of how rude people apparently can't take rudeness in return...I guess they just don't think they're rude. There will always be people like that, and I think the only way to deal with them is to treat them the same way they treat you.

They probably don't think that they are rude but they do know when someone is being rude to them. How about every time one of them is rude to you instead of being rude back ask "Why were you rude just now?" The answer would be interesting. If you do it every time they'll probably stop talking to you.

Yes, I have had similar experiences like that with coworkers, etc. Really, the rude people of the world are usually quite self centered and think they own the place and act like they can do what they want.

    Girllllllll, that is life!

People love to put out, what they don't want to get back! I have figured out though, when people tend to chalk their personas up as "that's just how I am", they don't really think about their actions and how what they say and do makes other people feel.

    It should not be a shock though, because;

    you reap what you sew

if it's good for the goose, it's good for the gander

if you can dish it, you can take it

if you like it, I love it!

you treat people like you want to be treated

and what goes around, comes around!

That is a good question. Maybe tomorrow you should get a sandwhich with extra onions on it...haha. People are so rude sometimes. Don't let them get to you! Everyone looks at me like I'm this sweet college girl, but when people are rude and mean to me, I return the "favor." People always look so surprised when this happens! Good luck and God Bless!!

Because everyone thinks that they are above, more important, know everything, and have more control/power of that other person. Therefore do not feel the need to pay attention to how they actually seem, but are very receptive to others. Those are the typical "victims" personality.

MMM sounds like your work place is not the friendliest place?

I worked in a place where a co- worker hit me with something! lol, guess I was not to politically correct for her? She was mad at me this is why,

Everyone was sucking up to then the president of the company (huge toy company) and I did not know who he was when I guess he thought I was going to suck up and he asked me something. I asked him who he was lol (politely as I could but frankly I was working it was none of his business I thought). He said he was the floor sweep, I said hi and told him what I was doing and why I was doing it (playing with toys finding out what was wrong with them) Remember he said he was a floor sweep. I did not know until after she hit me. He always stopped to talk to me after that!

Why I told you this is because is there something you do or are good at that gets you attention from the boss? Or are you really pretty or maybe young for your job??

From what you said here maybe there is some jealousy going on? Therefor they are being rude to you?

Source(s): I thought you handled yourself great!
