Why does string theory support multiple dimensions of space/time?

Why does string theory support multiple dimensions of space/time? Does having multiple dimensions logically disproves the string theory or does it support it?

When it was being developed, going to multiple dimensions was the only way that a consistent theory could be arrived at. It's all in the math.

String theory is a nice piece of mathematics that tries to tie up some loose ends with the current theories of physics. It preserves all the predictions of the standard model (our current theory of how stuff works) and adds on some high end stuff on top of it. As of right now String Theory makes not a single prediction that can be tested. All the things string theory predicts that can be tested are already predictions of our current model. String theory is a nice piece of mathemaics, but until we can test a new prediction made by the theory I'll don't have too much faith in it.
