Why is the ACLU taking the Westborough Baptist Church's free speech case?

This "church" of sorts is responsible for protesting over 150 soldiers funerals, Matt Shepard's funeral, they are the group called "God Hates F*gs" and yet the ACLU has now announced they will take up their case, because state laws are being passed to prevent the protests, which the ACLU claims violates free speech. Your thoughts?

Because they jump on any bandwagon and are the greatest offender of what they claim to be fighting against. They need to be dismantled.

There is a rational limit to "free speech". This insane church group has gotten their "message" out. What they are doing now is harrassment and is a disgrace. You don't have the "right" to say anything you want whenever you want and just going to these funerals and doing this is just plain wrong.

I think this group is a pitiful collection of the most disgusting and cruel group of idiots I could ever imagine.

I hope there is a way to stop them from mounting their hateful and hurtful protests.

But the Constitution protects even the most hateful speech, so they may have arguments for letting it continue.

The law can regulate the time, place or manner of protest, but not the content. I hope the legal eagles find a way to curb the horrific spectacle these morons put on.

But again, these skunks have rights too.

The ACLU claims to protect everybody's civil rights, but they are in fact selective when it comes to whom they will defend.

The core issue, the one the ACLU is concerned with, is if the legislation violates the groups constitutional right to free speech. The constitution doesn't say that the government shall make no law abridging freedom of popular speech. It protects all speech. I think the Westborough group is disgustingly self serving. However if laws are allowed to stand that limit what they can say then my freedom is ultimately in jeopardy.

The ACLU only takes high profile conteversial constitutional cases, while I find protests at vetrans funerals deplorable, and if I ever attend one that there is a protest I will be bailing my self out for assult on them, thats the way the ACLU operates, they have defended the Klan as well

loose speech already has limits. as an occasion, the information media can no longer invade the privateness of a private citizen and not using a darned sturdy justification, yet a public determine is honest activity. In such situations it is balancing act between the rights of two events. whilst somebody is picketing a funeral that's a sprint trickier because of the fact those regulations many times in basic terms shelter people who stay. combine that with the certainty that the present project is composed of a public determine, and there is probable no longer plenty we are able to do right here. regulations protecting the privateness of inner maximum electorate have held up in court, and so under that doctrine there may be the thank you to limit what WBC is doing with out harming loose speech.

This is a perfect example of why I am a dues-paying member of the ACLU.

The ACLU is almost universally considered some left-wing organization that is undermining American values.

However, as this example proves, they don't care whose rights are being infringed upon.

Believe it or not, the ACLU once even defended former Reagan Attorney General Ed Meese.

The ACLU often defends extreme groups in freedom of speech cases that no one else will take. It doesn't mean they support that group's point of view, just their right to express it. Not very PC of them, huh.

The ACLU is full of arrogant self righteous lawyers that only look out for themselves and not the good of America!!!

This should please the right. The ACLU exists to protect freedoms , no matter whose it is. When the constitution was written, it wasn't meant to protect only the majority, but to protect the minorities from being censored. Like the KKK. I guess the ACLU isn't liberal afterall. BTW, they also offered to take up Rush Limbaugh's case.

That being said, the westborough baptist group is ridiculous and has no roots in religion. They are all memebers of the same family, which is headed up by disbarred lawyers. Several of their own family memeber have disowned them. Go check out godhatesfags.com, but be careful...and turn your volume down!

Source(s): They were fought against in Michigan, and the outcome was (I think) that they were limited in the hours that they could protest, and had to be a certain distance from the funeral. They went away soon after

The KKK is allowed to march right. Though we may totally disagree with them there right to protest in allowed. I am not suprised the ACLU has taken there case. They protect everyone's freedom under the constitution. Not just liberals like some people would like you to believe.
