Is American Grammar going down the Drain?

I know I don't have the best grammar but some, actually a lot of people on Y! A! seem to have failed their English class with tripple F's. I saw a question about a substitute teacher and the girl was asking if he was a pedophile. She didn't use pedophile but "PETAFILE", maybe she was asking about the annual spending reports for the PETA Organization. Another word that gets me is when people say "Let me Aks you something" or "I Aksed him". How hard is it to say Asked or Ask.

I am a High School English teacher, my sister is and Elementary School teacher and our cousin teaches special needs so I think I can answer this with a degree of knowledge.....the answer is a definitive ....YES. newyorkgal 71 says that she believes that most teachers just don't care anymore but I can tell you that those of us who do care see a drastic down slide in the grammatical structure of most individuals writing and speech. I believe it is because we as a society have made it acceptable to use slang as a substitute for appropriate speech, until we as a whole make a change we as teachers can teach and instruct as much as we can and want but what is learned at home will usually prevail.

YES! Are the teachers stupid, lazy, or have they given up on educating students? Grammar went down the drain a long time ago.

I remember that "Petafile" post! How will students get jobs? They won't be able to fill out a job application. Perhaps they should stop trying to find a boyfriend or girlfriend, they could focus on homework and learning correct English.

Yes! Educated people who write "your" instead of "you're." I say they're educated because they have a diploma. And, it's not only grammar, but math too. Simple things, like adding a column of figures in their head: 8 + 6 + 9 + 4 is too much for them. They can't count change. Buy something for 81 cents, and give the clerk a dollar and 6 cents, and watch the confusion.

Many people on this site try to sound intelligent and all knowing. But, their gramma, word usage, spelling, etc. says that they are not very bright, not very knowledgeable, and not well read or educated.

Unfortunately, grammar hasn't been taught in the lower grades for many years. By the time the children are in Middle School, it is too late. On these sites however, most teens use internet slang. It's OK but I do worry when they think it is the norm.

Blame the internet and computers in general. We now have almost an entire generation who has learned to communicate with email and instant messangers and phone texting where good spelling and grammar is not required as long as you get your message across. You can also partially blame parents who let their kids play video games rather than making them read.

there aren't any grammar police on-line but there is a spell checker. most people type how they talk. alot of people don't know how to type well so they misspell words or shorten/modify them. so when you've got alot of different people on here answering question, of course there are going to be mistakes. alot of people don't know how to spell very well. don't make assumptions, some people have learning disabilities, some just type how the want.

The results of the Liberal Public Education system. I remember when the States out scored most other countries.

No, I think that people do not use the spell check button, or are not aware of what their are typing until it is listed 9 this happens to me all the time). The person who you are talking about just did not correct herself afterwards.
