    No box, no bass.

Here is some info on enclosures (and other tips):

    Yes, you have a box.

Here's a different twist for you. A sub-woofer "hits" because it is rapidly modifying the air pressure in the vehicle. It does this by getting bigger and then getting a lot smaller - very fast. The only way it can work is that you put it in a box. A box has six sides - five of them don't move, but the side that contains your sub-woofer does move. This movement makes the box bigger and smaller. When it does this, it changes the volume of the inside of your car and thereby changes the pressure.

If you mount the woofer in your rear deck, you are accomplishing this volume change IF your deck is sealed fairly well. If not - put it in a box.

This is why phasing is so important for all speakers. You want all the speakers moving out and moving in together, thereby affecting the largest volume change change on the interior of your car that is possible.

The box is what allows the bass. Without it, the speaker cone will just pump air around the speaker edge, from the front to the rear and back.

In a car, even an 8" or 10" speaker will do a very fine job, and is much easier to find a space for!

If you use the wall between the trunk and the passenger compartment as a mounting place, you use a 'built in box' and don't need a separate one.

like said before the sub will justt pump air, i would think you would need the box just for even means of holding the sub in position. You justt cant set it down in the trunk or anything. If you dont want to spend the money for a box you can just try to make one yourself. Im sure you can find directions on the internet on hwo to do it. if you are investing in a sub you mise well spend the few extra bucks for a box cuz it would sound so much better with it

Not if you mount it to the rear deck. In between the factory speakers and then you could use the trunk as the speaker box. But out of curiosity, what you were trying to hold it with if you didnt want a box?

be smart and get a box, the 12'' sub will really do nothing if you dont have a box, for a 12'' sub you would probably need a 1.5to2.75 cubic box for some good bangin bass what kind of sub is it and whats the rms wattage on it

well it depends on what kind of bass you whant...i know they use 2 sell a free air sub that did not need a box but you still need a mounting surface ..pioneer was the ones that made a sub like this

Technically, no. Then again, a person doesn't have to eat. Unless they want to live. So you don't need a box, unless you want decent bass, if even that! No box = really, really crappy bass. Crappy box = regular crappy bass. Great box = great bass. It's your choice.

you need a box for most subs except marine subs(for a boat)

No. However, it will sound much better if it is in an enclosure.
