Among the early arrivals was the late psychologist Carl Rogers (d. 1987), regarded by some researchers as the grandfather of today's well-established self-esteem movement. Rogers came up with the idea of “unconditional positive regard,” a technique he intended as a means for helping kids cope with feelings of inadequacy in the eyes of their parents when they failed to meet certain goals.Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Rogers
