What to do to prep bookcase prior to painting?

I have a particle board bookcase that has an ultra thin woodgrain veneer that is shiny, slick and glossy. What should I do to prepare the surface for painting?

I did this. I lightly sanded the shinny surface. Then used a spray paint to paint it. If your looking for a darker wood color paint it with a stain varnish. That also works. Just remember to lightly sand it before you attempt to paint it...lightly is the magic word here!!! Just enough to take the shine off then wipe it off with a damp cloth and let it dry then paint...with spray paint!!!
