Gainsborough's Emulsion Cleaner can be applied with a cotton swab to remove smoke and dirt from the painting.

A neutral soap should help, with distilled water, you must use only the bubbles. afterwards, you can glaze the painting with the clear part of an egg as a kind of varnish that will protect it from atmospheric pollutants, that can then be cleaned with plain water (preferebly distilled).

If it is a good one, get it professionally cleaned.

If not, try a mild soap water on a q tip in a corner and see that it doesn;t smear the oil....try a rag if it looks ok.

I would and have used dawn dish soap (just a bit) in warm watter and be careful when cleaning, if you clean them every month or so they should stay looking good!
