How come when i convert it to mp4 format i cant open it up on itunes or anything?

Not sure which converter you are using, suggest you use free trial version of Total Video Converter to test video/audio quality after files were converterd. Previously, Total Video Converter converts files to mpeg4 with pretty good quality.

If it still doesn't work, maybe the file was protected.
