what is the slave cable used for?

Update:

if you were to add a second second cd player, would it need to be in slave mode, or could you add a new cable?

look always you have one slave and one master , some times you have more than one slaves but always master is one , now you already have one CD player which automatically master if you want to add the second one it would be slave if you do not do this , your CPU won't understand from which one it should read , and remember on the back of your CD player there is a small lack button , which is written there , if you scroll the button on the slave it is as a slave , if you scroll it on to the master , it is master , and then attach your electricity and data cables , when you are attaching the cables it is not important which one is first attached , every thing depends on the black button ,

In most cases you would use a slave cable because there is only one input for this on most motherboards.A slave cable is a ribbon cable that connects two drives on the same cable into one input on the motherboard.

LIKE THE FIRST ANSWER SAID, IT'S FOR ADDING AN ADDITIONAL DEVICE TO THE IDE CABLE. AND YES YOU CAN JUST ADD ANOTHER CABLE TO THE MOTHERBOARDS OTHER IDE CONNECTION AND HAVE ONE DEVICE ON EACH IDE CONNECTION. BUT TO USE THEM ALL YOU CAN HAVE 2 DEVICES ON EACH IDE CONNECTION. THE DEVICE AT THEN OF THE CABLE IS MASTER AND THE DEVICE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CABLE IS SLAVE(PHYSICALLY). SO THE DEVICES THAT ARE CONNECTED TO THE MIDDLE PLUG ON THE CABLE HAVE THEIR JUMPERS SET TO SLAVE AND THE ONES ON THE END HAVE THEIR JUMPERS SET TO MASTER. HOWEVER, YOU COULD SET BOTH DEVICES ON ONE IDE CABLE TO CS, OR CSEL, OR CABLE SELECT(THEY ALL MEAN THE SAME THING), AND THEN THE COMPUTER DECIDES WHICH IS SLAVE AND WHICH IS MASTER ACCORDING TO WHERE THEY ARE CONNECTED ON THE IDE. THIS IS EASIER FOR NOVICES. BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE BOTH DEVICE JUMPERS SET TO CABLE SELECT FOR IT TO WORK PROPERLY. ANYHOO, THERE YOU HAVE IT. THERE IS MUCH MORE INFO ABOUT IT, BUT I TOUCHED THE IMPORTANT PARTS.

The slave cable is used to hook up a secondary ide drive such as another hard drive in slave mode.

One thing you can do with a slave cable is beat your slaves into submission.

usually on the motherboard, you have 2 buses for drives : Primery and secondry. each bus can handle 2 drives : Master and slave. gives you a total of 4 drives whiether they are CD or Harddrive. how ever, each drive of these has jumpers on thier back where you can decide to put as master or slave. if one drive is equipping one slot, then it is used and you cannot put another drive at the same bus on the same slot. for example: lets say you have 2 hard drives and one CD drive installed on your PC with the following configurations : hard drive one as Primery master, hard drive 2 as primery slave and CD drive as Secondry master. if you wish to install another CD drive, you would change the jumpers behind the drive to make it slave and plug it on the secondry bus for its the only slot unused ( does what i say make sence? :S )
