Again, what exactly is cosmopolitan attire?

I have posted this question a few times, and haven't really gotten a concise answer. I have been invited to a very chic social gathering, and the invites specify "cosmopolitan" attire. I am just trying to get a feel for what this really means. What's acceptable? What's not? I need to leave a lasting impression so please give me all the tips and pointers that you can. Thanks!

Think downtown NY or Chicago's Michigan Avenue. It's a chic modern look.

Here's a look you won't go wrong with:

A black, tight fitting turtle neck. Pair it witth either VERY loose fitting black drapey pants or a mid length skirt (A-line is always nice). Black tights and rounded toe black pumps. One long bold necklace and silver hoop earrings. Easy on all other accessories. Good luck.

From my research, intuition, and boyfriend... it's pretty, chic, and fancy, but not stiff and uptight. So perhaps a sleek, sexy red or black dress, perhaps with a dramatic sooping neckline or the like.

Also, for a very chic social gathering, it's COMPLETELY okay to call the host and ask! you can even remain anonymous. Just say you're quite embarassed but would like to know what cosmopolitan attire implies. You don't even have to give your name! Or if you know friends who are going, ask them what they are wearing.

The basic definition of the word "cosmopolitan" is being at home and comfortable all over the world; a citizen of the world. With that in mind, "cosmopolitan attire" means something classic, elegant, and sophisticated, something that would be accepted anywhere in the world. Think of fashion staples, such as the "little black dress," or a smartly-tailored suit in a neutral color. You wouldn't look out of place anywhere you go in something like that. That is cosmopolitan. What I would do for this gathering is pick up a classic piece, like a black, knee length sheath dress with an A-line hem, and accessorize it with simple gold or silver accent pieces, like a chunky bracelet or interesting earrings. Keep it simple and not too trendy. Your shoes should just be simple black pumps, with either black or beige pantyhose, whichever you feel more comfortable in. If you don't feel comfortable in a skirt at all, wear some nice black pants with a silk blouse in a jewel-toned color, such as jade green or amethyst. If you have a matching suit jacket, now would be the time to wear it. Put your hair in an updo if you're comfortable with it, or a nice low ponytail works well too. As long as you stay away from uber-trendy fashions (no leggings or skinny jeans for this event!), super-dressy gowns, or really flesh-baring tops or skirts, you will look perfect. I have included some links for the types of outfits I think will work best.

I have never actually heard this time referring to attire. Is it possible it is equivalant to black tie? Perhaps something 'big city-ish' would be appropriate? The event sounds too snobby for me.
