What do the red sox need to do to improve next season?
1)I say trade Manny to get some talent
2) Get Soriano
3) Get 2 Starting Pitchers
4) Get a Reliever

With Pap starting they will need a closer. They need a bat to make pitchers pitch to Papi, meaning Manny or someone else. Hopefully Manny. They don't think Wily Mo is ready to start in right, so that means bring back Nixon or get someone as good. Decide whether to keep Coco or get yet another centerfielder. Decide whether Pedroia is ready to start at second--he's not--or re-sign Loretta.
With Schilling, Beckett, Wakefield, Clement, Lester and Papelbon, they have a pretty good chance of fielding a solid five starting rotation. Timlin is coming back. Is Foulke a closer any more? He will always live on as the hero who fielded Renteria's comebacker in Game 4 in 2004, but he may not be a closer. Neither is Timlin. That means someone, probably not Manny Delcarmen, yet, probably not Craig Hansen, yet, has to close.

1) Keep Manny.....They need his bat to back up Big Papi
2) Forget Soriano. Get a cheaper SS with a good glove
3) Agreed. A lot depends on the health of the ones they have now
4) Determine if Foulke can come back and if not get a closer since Little Papi will be starting.

In 2006 they went into the season with too much pitching but ran into a rash of injuries, so they do need another quality starter. Wakefield is getting up there, and altho he eats up a lot of innings he is in the 40 yr-old range. I would like more team speed, and i would like them to cut ties with the so-called good clubhouse guys like Kapler and Mirabelli. Sure, clubhouse guys are good, but when they hit .125, they are not part of the solution. If the rumors are true about Papelbon moving to the rotation, then they will need an established closer to fill his role. I think Soriano is a good player but we know he strikes out a lot.

That stuff is easier said than done. A lot of teams need pitching. It's hard enough to get one decent pitcher, and getting two is almost impossible.
I still don't think Manny will be traded. He is still owed a lot of money, and trading him will only upset Ortiz. Soriano is a great hitter (and my favorite player when he was a Yankee), but he isn't as consistent as Ramirez, he is very streaky.

I think you have answered your own question VERY well. If they get all you ask for, they Will be unstoppable. However, in the mix, I would be sure to get rid of Wakefield for whim Francona keeps making excuses. He is a 500 pitcher at best, and if we could get someone for him, even a good prospect, let him go!! Then dump Taravez and Seanez. Hope what you suggest happens!!!

soriano would be a nice addition but his glove is awful. i would rather go after carlos lee.
they need 2 starting pitchers but they are going to have to trade for them. the free agent market is slim very slim. i don't think they will get zito either.
they def need relief pitching and a closer. i'm glad papplebon is starting but foulke isn't the answer in the bullpen and hanson isn't either.
