why do they call it a touchdown?

where the word touchdown originated, when was it first used

    if you look back into the history of football you will find that when players crossed the goal line the play was not over ( not like now) they were required to physically touch the ball on the ground in the end zone, hince the word Touchdown. watch some of the old videos and you will see them do it.

    Usually you touch the ball down on the end zone when you score. Touch-down probably came from that, and then eventually lost the dash to become one word.

    Cause when you reach it you gotta touch down there on the ground? lol with your feet i mean...and by down I mean the ground...
