Different Ways of Saying It: Welcoming People

Most learners of English want to learn how to speak English. They want to be able to speak English when meeting foreigners or visiting foreign countries. Many people take English conversation courses in the hope they will improve their speaking ability, but often the texbooks used in such courses do not tell the students that there is always more than one way of saying something, Let us look, for example, at different ways to meet and welcome people. Sometimes you can welcome someone in a very direct and informal manner; at other times, you can or should do so in a much more formal manner. It all depends on the situation : whether you know the person or not, whether you are going to have a long-term relationship or not , whether the person you are meeting is older or younger, etc. Let’s look at some short conversations.

Chapter 3

Different Ways of Saying It: Greeting People

Here are a few more examples of how people greet each other and engage in small talk. As you can see from the examples below, you can be especially easy-going when you are talking to a close friend. In such situations the greetings do not have to be very serious; the most important thing is to show that you are happy to see that person and that you care about him or her . The way in which you do that, however, can be very different from situation to situation
