Giant squid tentacles popping out of the sea to tear apart a ship or aliens coming to earth to take people to outer space could both be explanations for ships and airplanes disappearing in the Bermuda Triangle. But bad weather and human error are more likely causes.

The Bermuda Triangle is a triangular-shaped region in the Atlantic Ocean whose fame is largely owed to Charles Berlitz's 1974 book The Bermuda Triangle. Berlitz describes a series of mysterious disappearances of ships and airplanes, most notably the 1945 loss of five US bombers.

Berlitz's book is engaging, but often inaccurate. For example, he claims a cool and calm Charles Taylor was leading the US bombers when they suddenly disappeared on a clear and sunny day. But radio transmissions show the lieutenant was confused and lost at the time of the disappearance, and weather reports show that a storm had moved in.

There have been unexplained disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle. But the sea is a gigantic place where mysterious disappearances are bound to happen. The United States Coast Guard claims that the number of incidents involving lost ships in the Bermuda Triangle is no larger than any other heavily-traveled region of the world.
