The first manned flight to the moon was Apollo 8 in late 1968 which went into orbit around the moon to test the 'up and coming' Apollo equipment for landing on the moon.

There had been various probes sent to the moon before that - the Russians were first there, including a probe that photographed the far side of the moon for the first time in 1959.

The first actual landing on the Moon was Apollo 11 in 1969 with Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin.
