UNITED NATIONS — The U.S. responded Monday to North Korea's claim of a successful first test of a nuclear weapon by calling on the United Nations Security Council to enact wide-ranging sanctions, including a trade ban on military and luxury items, the power to inspect all cargo entering or leaving the country, and freezing assets connected with its weapons programs.

The strongly worded request came as U.S. Ambassador John Bolton told the Security Council that Washington would view any North Korean aggression against South Korea or Japan as an attack on the United States, U.N. diplomats said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the meeting was closed. The United States has defense agreements with Tokyo and Seoul, and thousands of U.S. troops are stationed in both countries.

Bolton echoed the stern warning delivered earlier in the day by President Bush, who called North Korea's nuclear test "unacceptable" and 'provocative," and warned the regime of Kim Jung Il that the U.S. would honor its commitments to protect its Asian allies commitments," Bush said during a brief White House appearance.

The president said North Korea was "one of the world's leading proliferators" of weapons technology, including transfers to Iran and Syria.

LOL! You quoted Fox News? They're consistently wrong...

We're so overcommited in Iraq still "looking for weapons of mass destruction" that we've ignored the country who has flat out TOLD us it was developing them for years, and now we don't have the resources to do anything about it. In the news today the Army said it's going to have to recall National Guard troops to meet its commitments in Iraq -- where are the soliders to fight North Korea going to come from?

Bush *should * have worked with the UN on Iraq, but didn't. He *should* have been taking care of North Korea unilaterally (based on our commitments to South Korea and Japan), but now can't -- and so will deal with the UN. As usual, he's doing everything backwards. And as usual won't do well at it. Sad.

Actually the liberal news was reporting it as well, Sanctions will be put into effect and china is backing us with sanctions to N. Korea as well.....S.korea has already sanctioned stuff from n korea as well.....but sadly , this only hurts the people of N korea , not the dictator jong II, he's got tons of stuff in his disney world palace....he even has a wave pool, I read this article from an ex bodyguard, it was an old article....

well, i hope not, but north korea deffinently has some serious power now. They can threaten any country, and they will eventually make nuclear missles that can travel anywhere. It sounds scary, and i hope it never happens, but with whats going on in the world, almost anything could happen right now. Did you also hear that Japan can make a nuclear factory in about three months? They're preparing for anything, especially war. Be on your toes!

THE PRESIDENT MESSED IN HIS NEST WHEN HE REFUESED TO GO ALONG WITH THE NON NECULAR PROFILERATION TREATY ABOUT 6 MONTHS INTO HIS FIRST TERM IN OFFICE. THAT OPENED THE DOOR FOR EVERY COUNTRY TO START THEIR OWN NECULAR PROGRAM. NOW HE IS TRYING TO DO DAMAGE CONTROL. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SITUATION FOR THE PLANET EARTH BECAUSE THE RADICALS ALL HAVE NUKES NOW SO BEWARE BECAUSE THEY ARE JUST DUMB ENOUGH TO USE THEM.

with what army? We are already over-extended in a bogus war. NK should have been handled a LONG time ago....but those cards were dropped when Bush took office.
