it sounds funny- but some sand (not everone can touch the ground from over there) , an item of clothing, and maybe a menue or book from a store (if possible ) and money (if possible)

even if you dont have kids a childs toy, or doll baby of their culture.

Of course, himself safe and sound. But ask him to collect the wrappers from his food and drinks, it is in both English and Arabic, very cool. Scraves, perfumes is really good over there, DVD movies are cheap, tea pots, he can buy a prayer rug, coins, flags. It depends on where he gets stationed and what the FOB has. Sometimes if he goes off base into the merchant shops he can find cool stuff.

A few emptied water bottles filled with sand, and a ladies' hijab (headscarf). When he gets back (and he WILL), you can use the sand to fill up pretty glass bottles and use them for decorations or gifts. The scarves are just plain pretty, easy to transport, and inexpensive (online they're like $4-8 US)...If you don't want to wear it, use it as a shelf or table scarf, and display framed photos of your husband's co-workers/ fellow soldiers (you didn't mention whether he's military or civilian).

Heaven watch you and you family!

It's very likely he'll be bringing back a bullet or two after being shot at. The best gift he could get for you is to return home alive.

How about some Iraqi money, the kind with the photograph of Saddam Hussein. They're sure to be rare soon.

Just pray that he comes home alive. If he can find a good Persian rug, it will always be of value.

I brought my wife back a headscarf, some perfume, and those slippers that everyone wears over there - very comfortable.

His original personality. He will definitely lose it after the hell he'll go through there. If he can't that, a cultural trinket sounds nice.
