High doses of calcuim help ease the severity of very sharp contractions, as does relaxiing in a tub of warm water.Source(s): personal experience - twice

Unfortunately the contractions are a necessary part of the birth process. They are what makes the baby come out, and without them the child will die. If labour has started it is time for your sister to get to the hospital.
If you can't get her to help, just stay calm and try to get her to stay calm. Make her a cup of tea and don't interfere. She should hold off pushing as long as she can, as the urge to push comes usually well before the cervix is dilated enough to admit the baby's head.
More harm is done by well meaning interference when people have to give birth without medical help, so just keep the tea and sympathy coming, but do try to get an ambulance or even talk to a doctor on the phone if this isn't possible.

Try some of those heat packs that you heat up in the microwave and put on the area of the pain. they seemed to work for me. Also, i know your not at hospital yet, but if she is keen on taking something for the pain, get an epidural. She will go from hell to heaven in a matter of minutes, it is the best thing you could ever wish for when in labour and it doesnt harm the baby at all. Goodluck guys!

Counter-pressure...roll tennis balls or a rolling pin along her back (sounds weird, but it works - i think my husband's hands nearly fell off from me yelling at him to massage).
Walking will help, even though it's painful.
I found bending over a bit helped, as well.
Warm baths/showers if she's not right at the point of delivery.

Is this is a home birth? If so, get off the computer & help her relax. If it's not, then go to the hospital... Next time try birthing classes:)

This is a joke right?
There is nothing to do but ride them out.
That is what labor is all about.

um, have you thought of calling a dr??
i know you're stressed, but you can't be on the computer while your sister needs you.
if you have to, call an ambulance and go to the ER.

Yes, breathe through them, stay calm, and work through it until the baby comes. Congratulations!
